This course provides a foundational introduction to art education with a focus on curriculum, pedagogy, history and models of contemporary practice. Students study the role of visual art in contemporary society and its importance to the cognitive, affective, psychomotor and creative development of elementary-aged children. Through critical readings, classroom observations and studio-based exploration, students analyze historical and contemporary approaches to teaching art, evaluate curricular models and design a developmentally appropriate lesson aligned to the Ohio learning standards for visual art.
