Reason For Policy
A university critical reading placement policy ensures that students begin their university coursework prepared for the demands of critical reading and thinking at the college level. This knowledge supports academic success and persistence. A clear placement policy also promotes equity and consistency by applying uniform standards across students and modalities, while allowing for multiple measures (e.g., test scores, GPA) to account for diverse educational backgrounds.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Does READ 00006 Critical Reading count toward graduation?
No. READ 00006 is a developmental course. “Developmental” (also known as remedial) means a course that is below college level and cannot be applied toward a certificate or degree program. Although this course counts toward course load for financial aid and other purposes, the credit hours earned are subtracted from your total for graduation. - Can I challenge my placement in READ 00006?
Placement in READ 00006 Critical Reading is based on two measures: high school GPA and test scores. If your high school GPA and your score in either ACT Reading or SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing or Accuplacer/Accuplacer Next Generation Reading are below threshold levels, you are required to take READ 00006. If one of the two measures is above the threshold, you are not required to take READ 00006. - Are my scores still used if I have been out of high school for two years or more?
If your scores in either ACT Reading or SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing or Accuplacer/Accuplacer Next Generation are older than two years, you may retake the Accuplacer Next Generation reading test to use for placement. If the new score falls below the university threshold, you will be required to take READ 00006.
