Policy Statement
In 2012, the Ohio Department of Higher Education established uniform statewide standards and college testing thresholds for remediation-free status for undergraduate students as part of Ohio Revised Code Section 3345.061(F). Students meeting these standards and thresholds are deemed remediation-free and are eligible to enroll in college-level courses in the respective subjects. Frequently Asked Questions
- If I meet remediation-free standards in math, does that mean I can take any math course at Kent State?
No. There are several courses which can be taken as remediation free but there are certain higher-level courses which require placement based on different criteria. Please see the Mathematics Placement policy for more information. - What if I meet remediation-free status with my ACT score but not with my ALEKS score?
Kent State will always defer to the score that gives you the highest placement. - What if I am not remediation free in reading or English?
Please work with your advisor to determine the best placement for you based on the policies set forth in the English Placement and Critical Reading Strategies Placement policies.
Definitions
ALEKS (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces): A web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what students knows and do not know in a course. ALEKS then instructs students on the topics they are most ready to learn. As students work through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses them to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage, and ALEKS avoids multiple-choice questions. Students who show a high level of mastery of an ALEKS course will be successful in the actual course they are taking. (Source: www.aleks.com)
Destination Kent State: A three-part orientation program designed for first-year students to familiarize them with Kent State University. The program provides new students with the tools necessary to enjoy a successful journey to graduation.
