About This Program

The French for the Professions minor offers core courses in language, culture and conversation/texts for professional purposes. The minor is especially well suited as a combination with a business or marketing major, as well as with majors in the health professions, hospitality and international relations.

Admission Requirements

Admission to a minor is open to students declared in a bachelor’s degree, the A.A.B. or A.A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree (not Individualized Program major). Students declared only in the A.A. or A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree in Individualized Program may not declare a minor. Students may not pursue a minor and a major in the same discipline.

Students with prior knowledge of French may be able to fulfill one or more of the prerequisite courses through an Alternative Credit option. Students may also fulfill one or more of the prerequisite courses by starting in a higher level course than FR 13201 and applying for a proficiency waiver as outlined in the Foreign Language Placement policy.

FR 33091 is taken twice. Courses taken at the Paris Institute that relate to the professions may fulfill one of these required courses with approval.

Graduation Requirements

• Minimum 6 credit hours in the minor must be upper-division coursework (30000 and 40000 level).
• Minimum 6 credit hours in the minor must be outside of the course requirements for any major or other minor the student is pursuing.
• Minimum 50 percent of the total credit hours for the minor must be taken at Kent State (in residence).

• Some courses in the Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies are offered on a rotating basis, and course availability may change at any time. Students should see the program coordinator or academic advisor for course planning.

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program will be able to:

1. Speak in French on topics ranging from personal to cultural and professional issues.
2. Write in French on a variety of situations and for multiple purposes.
3. Read and comprehend various text types such as newspaper articles, documents and web content with the aid of dictionaries and other resources.
4. Exhibit a fundamental understanding of francophone culture.
